ENTERTAINMENT AT CHILDREN’S PARTIES

Don’t feel guilty if you decide to splash out on an entertainer to take the weight off your shoulders, so that you are relaxed and happy and can enjoy the day with your child. If you are rushed off your feet and tense, your mood might affect the party atmosphere.

As with most professionals, the best entertainers are found by word of mouth. However, you should always talk to them before you make a booking to find out exactly what their act consists of, so that there are no nasty surprises on the day.

Here are some popular choices:

CLOWNS. Be aware that some young children can find clowns frightening. If your child is one of those, see if you can find one who will perform without make-up. Most will do magic tricks or have other skills, so find out exactly what they offer.

MAGICIANS: Most young children are enchanted by a bit of magic. Older children will want something more sophisticated so for them choose a magician who is a member of the Magic Circle.

FACE PAINTERS: Face painting takes time so it’s best to have the face painter work on one child at a time while other activities are going on. Professionals will ensure all paints used are hypo-allergenic and non-toxic.

BALLOON MODELLING: Obviously not sufficient entertainment on its own but most children are delighted to go home with a balloon model made by an entertainer towards the end of the party.

GENERAL ENTERTAINER: See exactly what they offer. They will usually tell some jokes, perhaps do a few magic tricks or some balloon modelling, and arrange some games with inexpensive prizes.

MAKE-UP PARTIES: Really only suitable for an all-girl party: the boys will feel left out and finding different activities just for them is an added worry. Hire a professional who will use makeup suitable for young skin.

DISCOS: Most girls love to dress up and dance but there are deejays that specialise in children’s parties and will have activities that will also get the boys up on the floor.

BOUNCY CASTLES/BALL PONDS: Always a hit, and a comparatively inexpensive option, but it needs supervision and a large garden. They are an excellent idea if you are expecting lots of children, but if you are pushed for space may be better in a rented hall than at home.
